The Benefits of Vegetarianism
As time moves on there is an increasing belief amongst people that becoming a vegetarian may make a difference. It is surprising how many people are willing to do this but cannot grasp just how important even one person who changes is in the overall picture. While it might be true that one extra person won’t make a huge statistical difference in a world of meat-eaters, you can do a lot as an individual that will be good for you and good for hundreds of animals. One argument for making this change are the benefits it has on your health and the problems that an excess of meat causes, like heart disease; this is the most common reason for death in America and other big meat eating nations.
Meat, dairy produce and eggs are the main sources of cholesterol which are the contributing factors in coronary heart disease and other circulation problems. According to Earth Save, the average vegetarian has about a quarter of a chance of having a heart attack as the average person. On the other hand the numbers of heart attacks in vegans are an astonishing 10 times less than those of people that eat meat. The improvements in health do not end there if you are a vegetarian.
Meat contains a number of preservatives which have links with cancer, something which is dramatically reduced when you do not eat meat. Animal feed also contains hormones to make them put weight on faster so vegetarians are not usually exposed to these chemicals which most people consume everyday. The consumption of lactose will also be reduced which is claimed to cause some digestive problems. On a more ethical note, you will be surprised how much less suffering in animals you will be responsible for by becoming a vegetarian.
In fact the death toll of animals may be far greater than expected with figures in the region of 2,700 eaten by an average American in their lifetime. It is a sobering thought that a change in diet could literally save hundreds of animals from being slaughtered over the course of a decade alone. Continuing along this line and by giving up eggs and milk, many hens and cows will be saved from the degradation of just being alive to feed us. The arguments are very convincing and difficult to dismiss; it is definitely better to become a vegetarian. The reduction in animal life lost and the improvement in your health should be convincing enough.
